Alcove Units in Horn Park

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make alcove units for homes in Horn Park, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Somewhere to keep books and records
  • Everyday clutter left on show
  • Shop-bought shelving that does not fill the recess

Built-in living-room furniture in Horn Park

About 44% of the homes in the area around Horn Park went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how alcove units are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Horn Park include Church of St Saviours (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. So a van fitting furniture in Horn Park normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension arranged through the council. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.

Eltham Palace, about 1 mile east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. For an older house near Church of St Saviour, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Alcove units in Horn Park

We fit alcove units across Greenwich and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. After that we send a quote in writing, and once you are happy the units are made at our workshop and fitted in your home. Typical reasons to get in touch are alcoves that aren’t square and room to work in an alcove; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Horn Park, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. A long through room gives alcove units a whole wall to work with, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You let us know which room it is and roughly what you’d like in the alcoves.
  2. At the design visit, we measure both alcoves, check the walls and look at the skirting and picture rail.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop, each one sized to its own alcove.
  5. Fitting day: the units go in, are scribed to the alcoves and levelled on a plinth or feet.

Before we arrive

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

What prompts alcove units in Horn Park

Where a fireplace has been blocked up or removed, the chimney breast can look bare. A pair of alcove units frames it and gives the wall a sense of order.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
  • Everyday clutter left on show
  • Furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove
  • Somewhere to keep books and records

For a family home near Horn Park Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

What to check before you book

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we typically scribe the sides and often the top too. It is what makes a fitted unit look fitted.

Shelves

Shelf heights are planned around your things so tall books and records have room. A shallower top shelf can keep things within reach.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.

Questions we are often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Horn Park?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Can you make alcove units for a home in Horn Park?

Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London, and Horn Park is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Are alcove units spray painted or hand painted?

We offer spray painting in the workshop and hand painting on site. Spray painting gives a smooth, factory-like finish, while hand painting suits a softer, traditional look and is simple to touch up. We will help you choose at the design visit.

Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?

We plan alcove units so any chimney vent stays clear. Even a blocked chimney needs some ventilation to help keep damp away, so we never box a vent in.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
