Fitted wardrobes across Camden: what to expect
Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. Others work around a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a room too narrow for hinged doors and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes.
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- We visit to measure the room and discuss the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Tell us about parking as well, as a van normally needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
- You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
- The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
- Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.
Quotes in Camden
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Why work with us

Getting a quote
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Fitted wardrobes across Camden: local notes
Camden has bedrooms of every shape, from bay-fronted rooms in older houses to tight rooms in modern flats. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have, with the inside laid out around what you keep.
The biggest shares of homes in Camden were built before 1919 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. More than a third of the homes in Camden (about 49%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that aren’t straight. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 28% of households in Camden, based on Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
We cover the whole of London, so homes in Camden are well within our area. Let us know about access and parking when you first get in touch.
St Pancras: For an older house near Lumen United Reformed Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Dr Johnson's House, about 0.9 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you. Bespoke work is not as quick as buying from a shop.
What to check before you book
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- A written quote that sets out the job
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
Pricing fitted wardrobes in Camden
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- The internal fittings
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The width and height of the space
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.
Before the design visit
When you contact us, these help most:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Examples of the look you’re after
- Your postcode and the borough
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Do you need fitted wardrobes?
The usual reason is simple: there isn’t enough storage. Clothes spill onto chairs, into spare rooms and under the bed. Built-in wardrobes make use of the full wall, up to the ceiling.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- A room too narrow for hinged doors
- An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
Questions we are often asked
How long will the fitting take?
The fitting depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
What materials do you use?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, and the quote says which is used where.
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Camden?
Yes. Camden is part of the area we cover, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Will you travel outside London?
No. We work in London and nowhere else.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent.
Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?
Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we plan airflow behind and within it, which helps avoid condensation.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
