Fitted wardrobes in Hackney: how it works
Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We plan for the people using it too. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about storage boxes stacked under the bed and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use.
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
- At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you.
- We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
- The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.
Quotes in Hackney
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.
What you get with us

Getting a quote
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit. To get started, message us from the contact page. You receive a written quote after the visit.
Around Shoreditch
Our area takes in the homes around Virginia Primary School, St Leonard's Church and Hackney University Technical College and the streets around them. You’ll also find The Prince's School of Traditional Arts (within half a mile west), Former London Apprentice pub (close by, under half a mile north-west), Artillery Ground (0.5 miles south-west) and Bishopsgate Institute Special Collections and Archives (0.5 miles south). There is a railway station in Shoreditch itself: Shoreditch High Street station. A little further out are Dennis Severs' House (within half a mile south) and Tower of London (1.2 miles south). Not far away are Tower Hill.
- Places of worship nearby include St Mary-at-Hill (1.1 miles south)
Bedroom storage across Hackney
In Hackney, a spare room often doubles as a study or a guest room. The design can help one room work two ways.
The biggest shares of homes in Hackney were built before 1919 (about 35%) and since 2000 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 60% of households in Hackney live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day. 7 of the 20 places in Hackney with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.
We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and Hackney is part of that. Wherever you are, the job starts with a design visit.
Shoreditch: Close to Artillery Ground? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your home is one of the older houses near St Leonard's Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
When you need someone else
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
What it costs
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How square the room is
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What to send when you contact us
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.
What it’s made from
Doors and drawer fronts
Where there’s room to open them, hinged doors give full access. In a narrow room, sliding doors save space, though only part of the inside is open at once.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.
Before and after fitting day
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
- Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Hinges can usually be adjusted to line the doors up again.
Let doors close gently rather than slamming, and slide doors without forcing them. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.
Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop, since there’s a design visit, a quote and workshop time first.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Hackney
How is the price worked out?
Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. We only take on work in London.
Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?
Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift, and the wardrobe is put together in the room. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it is useful to be around at the end.
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
