About our wall beds

A spare room that holds a bed all year is often wasted the rest of the time. A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, folds up into a fitted cabinet during the day and down when it’s needed, giving you floor space back. We build wall beds into fitted cabinets for spare rooms, home offices and studio flats, often with shelves, cupboards or a desk alongside so the wall works as storage too. The bed mechanism is fixed securely as its maker specifies, and the cabinet is built to suit it. You need clear space in front to lower the bed, so we plan the room around that. At the design visit we measure the room, check the wall and talk through the bed size and what goes around it.

Why made for your room

In a small London home, a guest bed that stands all year takes space you could use every day. A wall bed built into fitted cabinets folds away, and the cabinets around it can hold shelves, cupboards or a desk.

What we make

  • A spare room that is also an office
  • Sleeping space in a studio flat
  • A guest bed that folds away
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • Floor space during the day

Materials and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Shelves or a desk alongside

We work in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well; birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it suits long shelves, carcasses and drawer boxes. Finishes are spray painted in our workshop for a smooth, even surface, or hand painted, which is easy to touch up later. The colour is agreed with you.

How it works

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you’ll use it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, check the wall and floor, and talk through the bed size and the cabinets around it.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop to suit the bed mechanism.
  5. We fit the cabinets and the bed, fixed securely as the mechanism’s maker specifies.

Before the design visit

Before the design visit, think about the bed size you need, who will sleep in it and how often, and what else the room is used for. Note what’s on the wall where the bed will go, such as sockets or radiators.

Things to know

Space in front

A wall bed needs clear floor space in front of it to fold down. We check that at the design visit and plan furniture placement around it.

Fixing it securely

The mechanism carries a lot of weight as the bed lowers and lifts, so it must be fixed as its maker specifies. The wall and floor matter, and we check both at the design visit.

A desk with the bed

A desk can sit alongside the wall bed, with shelves above, so the room works as an office by day and a guest room when needed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf wall beds?

Off-the-shelf furniture suits some rooms well. Where the room has awkward sizes, uneven walls or a lot to store, furniture made for the space usually works better. Here’s how the two compare.

What affects your quote

Every job is quoted for your room after the design visit, so we don’t publish prices. These are the things that shape the quote:

  • The size of the piece and how much of the wall or room it fills
  • How many doors and drawers there are, and what goes inside
  • The materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both
  • The finish: spray painted in our workshop or hand painted
  • The room itself: uneven walls, sloping ceilings, cornices, skirting and picture rails
  • Access: stairs, lifts, parking and getting the sections into the room

Read how it works for the whole process.

What your quote includes

After the design visit we send a written quote. It sets out:

  • What we’ll make, with the layout and sizes agreed at the design visit
  • The materials and the finish, including the paint colour
  • What goes inside: shelves, hanging, drawers and any special fittings
  • Fitting in your home
  • What isn’t included, such as electrics, plumbing, gas or decorating, which are for other trades
  • How and when the work will be done, and the payment terms

Looking after your wall beds

Paint needs time to cure fully after it’s applied, so treat new paintwork gently at first: avoid knocks, wipe spills promptly and don’t stand heavy or damp things on new surfaces. Clean with a soft, damp cloth and a mild cleaner rather than anything abrasive. Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up if they get marked, and hinged doors can be adjusted at the hinge if they drift out of line as a house moves with the seasons.

Wall beds: common questions

What is a wall bed?

A bed that folds up into a fitted cabinet on the wall when you don’t need it, and down when you do. It’s sometimes called a Murphy bed.

Can a wall bed go in a small room?

Often, yes, but it needs clear space in front to lower it. We check the room at the design visit.

Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?

Yes. Cabinets, shelves and a desk alongside the bed are common.

Is a wall bed safe?

The mechanism must be fixed securely as its maker specifies. We check the wall and floor at the design visit and fit it that way.

Does the bedding stay on the bed?

That depends on the mechanism and the bedding. Thick duvets, pillows and tall mattresses need checking against the cabinet depth, which we talk through at the design visit.

Can a wall bed go in a studio flat?

Yes. In a studio a wall bed frees floor space during the day.

Which parts of London do you cover?

We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London. See areas we cover.

Do you work on Saturdays?
