Fitted wardrobes across SE3: what to expect
Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We plan for the people using it too, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. Most enquiries start with several odd pieces where one run of storage would do and a room too narrow for hinged doors; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room.
- At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
- Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.
What goes into your quote
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

How to get a quote
It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
Around Blackheath
Our area takes in the homes around St Matthew Academy, Manor House Gardens and The Princess Of Wales Pub, among other places. Also close by are Church of All Saints (close by, under half a mile south-west), Blackheath Proprietary School (less than half a mile south) and All Saints' Church of England Primary School Blackheath (less than half a mile west). Blackheath has its own railway station: Blackheath station. Nearby you will also find Lewisham Shopping Centre (1.1 miles south-west) and Royal Observatory (0.7 miles north-west). For a walk, there is Birdbrook Road Nature Reserve.
Fitted wardrobes for homes across SE3
Across SE3, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. Fitted wardrobes are drawn up to suit the room you actually have, with the inside laid out around what you keep.
About 33% of the homes in the SE3 postcode district went up before 1919, and about 23% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 40% of households in the SE3 postcode district live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day. Of the 9 places we have local pages for in SE3, 9 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and SE3 is part of that. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and discuss the design.
Blackheath: Queen's House, about 0.9 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For a flat near Blackheath station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting lets you judge the colour in the room. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, which gives large doors a smooth, even surface. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic panelled door.
What affects the price in SE3
The price for your room depends on:
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- How many doors and drawers there are
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.
Getting in touch
A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it’s useful to send:
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Flats, conversions and lettings
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
Could you do it yourself?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in SE3
Sharing a bedroom means sharing the wardrobe. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections, each with the rails, shelves and drawers its owner needs.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
- Too little room for clothes
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- Space under the eaves going to waste
Questions we’re often asked
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
What are your fitted wardrobes made from?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes, and the quote says which is used where.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?
We plan it with you at the measuring visit, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes, as long as it is ventilated. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it.
