Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 53% of the housing in the area around Shooter's Hill, with about 27% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Shooter's Hill include The Bull Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Water Tower at East Side of Junction (Grade II), under half a mile east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Greenwich included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Shooter's Hill, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.

If you live near Eaglesfield Park, alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. For a flat near Falconwood station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Shooter's Hill is part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, about 1 mile north-east of Plumstead. Whether your home in Shooter's Hill is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. We cover places right across Greenwich, large and small.

Every home in SE18, SE9 and DA16 is covered for alcove units. You’ll find streets here like Brent Road, Dover Road and Kinlet Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for alcove units. Nearby, we also make alcove units in Kidbrooke (1 mile west), Well Hall (1 mile south-west), East Wickham (1 mile east), Avery Hill (1 mile south) and Plumstead (1 mile north-east). Elsewhere in Greenwich, we also cover Greenwich (3 miles west), Eltham (2 miles south), Westcombe Park (2 miles north-west), Maze Hill (3 miles west), Coldharbour (3 miles south) and Charlton (2 miles north-west).

Alcove units in Shooter's Hill

A classic layout is a low cupboard with open shelves above. Closed cupboards hide everyday clutter, and the shelves are for books and favourite objects. The top of the cupboard makes a useful surface at a comfortable height. Heights are agreed with you to suit the room and your things. If you are living with furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove and room to work in an alcove, alcove units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Shooter's Hill, so it’s a layout worth planning for. Alcove units normally go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What prompts alcove units in Shooter's Hill

Sometimes there are old units already, worn, badly fitted or the wrong size for how you live. Starting again lets you rethink the layout, from the shelf heights to the doors.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
  • Bowed walls and sloping floors
  • A place for a small desk
  • Units that sit well with original features

For a family home near Shooters Hill Sixth Form College, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Before you hire any carpenter

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Treating damp in the chimney breast or walls
  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Any structural work on the chimney breast

Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Scribed side panels

What affects the price in Shooter's Hill

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How big the furniture is
  • How square the room is

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Helping us understand the room

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a quote in writing.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch to say you’d like alcove units, with a note of the room they’re in.
  2. We come to measure and talk through cupboards, shelves, heights and doors. If one alcove needs a desk or a TV space, this is when we plan it.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray-painted finish is applied there too, if that is what you chose.
  5. The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill. Any scribing to the walls is done on the day.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Your questions about alcove units in Shooter's Hill

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Falconwood station?

Yes, homes across Greenwich and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Shooter's Hill?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?

That depends on the room and what you’d like to store. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice. We agree the height at the design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Which finishes are there for alcove units?

You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted finish in your home. Either way, the colour is agreed with you. Spray painting is smooth and even, while hand painting is easy to touch up.

How long does it take to fit alcove units?

The time on site depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The units are made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting, scribing and finishing.
