How we make fitted wardrobes for DA16
What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It is useful to think about what you wear most before we meet. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a room too narrow for hinged doors and storage boxes stacked under the bed.
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Tell us about parking as well, as a van normally needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
- A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.
What goes into your quote
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Why work with us

- 300+ projects completed
- Workshop-made and fitted by us

Ask for a quote
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.
Landmarks near Welling
We fit furniture in homes around Nags Head pub, Danson Primary School and Bexley Grammar School and the streets around them. Nearby too are St John's Church (under half a mile east) and Danson Park (less than half a mile south-east). Welling’s nearest station is Welling station, about 0.5 miles north-west of the centre. Well-known places in the area include Broadway Shopping Centre (1.6 miles east) and Bexley Hospital (0.9 miles east).
Homes across DA16 and their bedrooms
Across DA16, including Welling, Bexleyheath and Blackfen, bedrooms come in every size. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. The inside layout is planned around your things.
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 59% of the housing in DA16, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. More than half of the homes in the DA16 postcode district (about 59%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 59% of households in DA16, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping, so access to homes in DA16 is planned in advance.
Welling: Near listed buildings like Danson Park Mansion, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Welling, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For families living near Danson Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.
What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes
Several things affect the price:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The overall size of the piece
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.
Getting in touch
A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- What the furniture needs to hold
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Getting a big standalone wardrobe into a flat or up a tight stair can be difficult. We make fitted wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
Caring for painted furniture
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
- Work out the split between long and short hanging
- Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.
Keep any ventilation gaps clear, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and deal with any damp early.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.
People normally get in touch with us about things like these:
- A room too narrow for hinged doors
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
FAQs: fitted wardrobes in DA16
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
What materials do you use?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. We do not plaster or decorate. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
Should I send photos?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?
Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that’s often wasted and can include bedside shelves. We measure the bed and the room at the design visit.
