Alcove units for your home in Bopeep: cupboards and shelves built into the alcoves beside a chimney breast. We visit to measure and talk through the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.

  • Shop-bought shelving that does not fill the recess

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

Alcove units for homes in Bopeep

Few alcoves in older houses are truly square. Walls bow, corners wander and floors slope, sometimes all in one recess. Each unit is built in our workshop to our measurements and scribed to the walls when we fit it, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. Adjustable feet or a plinth set it level. We make alcove units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are tired cupboards in the alcoves and everyday clutter left on show.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Bopeep, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. A long through room gives alcove units a whole wall to work with. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Bopeep homes and alcove units

In the streets around Bopeep, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 59%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List records 11 entries within half a mile of the centre of Bopeep. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. All of London, Bromley included, is inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Bopeep. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

For a flat near Knockholt station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Lullingstone Castle, about 2.5 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. For families living near Chelsfield Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Bopeep is about 3 miles north-west of Orpington, within the London Borough of Bromley. We can visit homes in Bopeep on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. We list Bopeep among 49 places we cover in Bromley.

In BR6, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets like Shoreham Lane and Hewitts Road, whether you want alcove units or another piece made for the room. Nearby, we also make alcove units in Maypole (1 mile north), Chelsfield (1 mile north-west) and Pratt's Bottom (1 mile south-west). We also make alcove units in nearby places like Orpington (3 miles north-west), Bromley (6 miles north-west), Beckenham (8 miles north-west), St Mary Cray (3 miles north-west), Chislehurst (5 miles north-west) and Biggin Hill (6 miles south-west).

What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the units you have in mind.
  2. We come to measure the alcoves, look at the walls and agree the design with you, noting the skirting, picture rail and any chimney vent.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, for you to read through at your own pace.
  4. The units are made in our workshop.
  5. The units are fitted in your home and scribed to follow the walls.

Preparing the room

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Getting a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we normally scribe the sides and often the top too. It is the difference between a unit that sits in the alcove and one that belongs there.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood helps shelves stay straight under books across a broad recess. Thickness is chosen to suit the span and the weight.

FAQs: alcove units in Bopeep

Will a conservation area stop me having alcove units fitted in Bopeep?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Bopeep?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Where is the furniture made?

We make it in our workshop, to the sizes taken at the measuring visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Is it possible to have a desk built into one alcove?

Yes. A desk in one alcove, with shelves above and storage below, works well in many rooms. We plan the height and depth with you, with a route left for cables.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

What affects the cost of alcove units

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The internal fittings
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The overall size of the piece

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Approximate measurements of the space

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.

Could you do it yourself?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
