Fitted wardrobes across BR6: what to expect

Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are several odd pieces where one run of storage would do and clothes with nowhere proper to go.

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors.

What affects the price in BR6

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Our area takes in the homes around The Cricketers pub, Church of All Saints and The Priory School and the streets around them. Broom Hill’s nearest station is Orpington station, about 0.6 miles south-west of the centre. Bedroom storage across BR6

In BR6, a spare room often doubles as a study or a guest room. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them, keeping clothes, bedding and everything else out of sight.

The biggest shares of homes in the BR6 postcode district were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 34%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 28%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 28% of homes in the BR6 postcode district date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. Around a third of the homes in the BR6 postcode district (about 34%) were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Post-war bedrooms are typically simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.

Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, BR6 included. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and discuss the design.

Broom Hill: If your children go to Perry Hall Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Close to Jubilee Country Park? Fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Tell us which walls face outside
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat

Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.

Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. Opening a window now and then helps.

Is bespoke worth it?

Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. We set fitted wardrobes level and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers can be hidden behind doors or shown as part of the front. Internal drawers keep a clean run of doors.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wardrobe doors are large, so stability matters. MDF gives a flat, smooth surface that paints well.

What prompts fitted wardrobes

After a loft conversion, the new bedroom usually needs storage that suits the slopes. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty, leaving the floor open.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall

What we do not do

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Building work to create a loft room

Questions we’re often asked

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Is the furniture made to order?

We make it in our workshop. After that, we fit it in your home.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. You will get a written quote once we’ve measured up.

How do I get started?

It’s easiest to get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we plan airflow behind and within it to help avoid condensation and mould.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

The fitting depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The wardrobes are made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
