Elmstead Alcove Units

In Elmstead, we design alcove units around the room you actually have. We design your alcove unit at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Toys and paperwork with no proper home
  • Somewhere to keep books and records

Alcove units in Elmstead: what you get

A classic layout is a low cupboard with open shelves above. The cupboards take the things you’d rather not see, and the shelves are for books and favourite objects. The cupboard top gives you a ledge for a lamp, a speaker or a plant. Heights are agreed with you to suit the room and your things. People normally come to us about worn or badly fitted alcove units and units that sit well with original features; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, which matters around Elmstead, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, alcove units can run the full length of one wall. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Questions we are often asked

Can you make alcove units for a home in Elmstead?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and Elmstead is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Elmstead?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Should both alcoves have the same units?

It’s up to you. A matching pair balances the chimney breast, but you might want a desk on one side and cupboards on the other. We can keep the details the same so they still look like a pair.

What affects the price of alcove units?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

Can an alcove unit include a desk?

Yes. One alcove can take a desk with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard beneath. We plan the height and depth with you.

How do I get a quote?

Just get in touch through our contact form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, followed by a written quote.

When is bespoke worth it?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves, go through the design and check the route from the street to the room.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the units.
  4. In our workshop we build the units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized so each piece gets up the stairs and round the corners.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the alcoves and scribe them to the walls. A spray-painted finish arrives done; a hand-painted one is applied once the units are in.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Arranging a design visit

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Living-room storage in Elmstead

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 43% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Elmstead, with about 18% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Elmstead. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Elmstead. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

Bromley Palace, about 1.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a flat close to Elmstead Woods station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides any slope. Its height can match the skirting board for a tidy finish.

Birch plywood

We often use birch plywood for drawer boxes too because it stands up to daily use. The edge can be painted or shown as a detail.

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Any structural work on the chimney breast
  • Treating damp in the chimney breast or walls
  • Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Scribed side panels
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Some flat-pack shelves are thin and start to sag once they’re loaded. We size our shelves for their span and what they’ll carry, using birch plywood where strength matters. Still, a decent off-the-shelf unit can be the sensible choice if you’re renting or moving soon. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
