Alcove Units in Sundridge
In Sundridge, we design alcove units around the room you actually have. We design your alcove unit at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

How we make alcove units for Sundridge
A capped or blocked chimney should still be ventilated to help keep damp out of the breast. We keep any vent clear when we design alcove units, rather than boxing it in. Any damp in the alcoves should be dealt with by the right trade before the units go in. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are standard units leaving gaps at the sides and room to work in an alcove.
Wherever your home in Sundridge sits in London’s mix of housing, alcove units start with the room you actually have. Period rooms bring sloping floors and mouldings; newer rooms bring stud walls and service boxing. Each is measured, and the pieces are made to fit it.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting works for alcove units
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including pictures on nearby walls. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.
- To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty, and mention if you live in a flat or up a few flights of stairs.
- We visit to measure the alcoves, discuss the design and check the route from the street to the room. It’s useful to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
- We then send a written quote for the units.
- The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
- On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls. A spray-painted finish arrives done; a hand-painted one is applied once the units are in.
Before we arrive
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Advice
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
What affects the cost of alcove units
What you pay depends on:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
Ahead of the design visit, we will normally ask about:
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- How you want to use the space
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.
Built-in living-room furniture in Sundridge
Homes built before 1919 make up about 33% of the housing in the streets around Sundridge, with about 27% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Sundridge is within about a quarter of a mile of the Garden Road Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Around Sundridge, about 33% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Bromley as a whole, about 17%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
Near listed buildings like Quernmore Secondary School, about 0.5 miles west of the centre of Sundridge, older homes may keep original joinery that alcove units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near St Andrew, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

Why people ask for alcove units in Sundridge
In bedrooms, the alcoves may be the only place for hanging space. A fitted alcove cupboard holds clothes without filling the floor, which helps in a small bedroom.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Alcoves that are wasted space
- Bowed walls and sloping floors
- Storage that suits a period room
- Old alcove cupboards that have seen better days
If you live near Elmstead Wood, alcove units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.
Before you choose who makes it
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
Flats, leases and landlords
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
FAQs: alcove units in Sundridge
Do you cover homes near Sundridge Park station?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you make alcove units for a home in Sundridge?
Yes, we work across Bromley, Sundridge included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Should both alcoves have the same units?
That’s your choice. A matching pair balances the chimney breast, but you might want a desk on one side and cupboards on the other. Shared details, like the plinth and paint colour, keep them looking related.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.
Can you build alcove units for alcoves that are not square?
Yes. Each alcove is measured at the design visit, make the units in our workshop and trim the edges on site to meet the wall, so there are no tricky gaps.
