Fitted wardrobes in BR1: how it works

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, keeping long hanging where there is height and drawers or shelves lower down. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. Most enquiries start with not enough hanging space and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

How our quotes work

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

What you get with us

  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • 300+ projects completed
  • Built around your room

Starting with a design visit

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Homes across BR1 and their bedrooms

We make fitted wardrobes for homes across BR1, in Chislehurst, Catford and Plaistow and beyond. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it’s made of.

About 29% of the homes in the BR1 postcode district went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 26% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. A quarter or more of the homes in BR1 (about 29%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. Of the 15 places we have local pages for in BR1, 3 have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules, so we plan access to your home in BR1 ahead of fitting day.

Plaistow: Near listed buildings like Quernmore Secondary School, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Plaistow, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live near Downham Fields, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand
  • Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
  • List the things that won’t hang, like jumpers and shoes

If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff. Clear anything that falls into it.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe are not blocked, especially where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and have the cause looked at early.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

How we price fitted wardrobes

Several things affect the price:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Parking near your home
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Before the design visit

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

Is bespoke worth it?

Getting a big standalone wardrobe into a flat or up a tight stair can be difficult. We make fitted wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home.

What to check before you book

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.

Where is the furniture made?

Each piece is made in our workshop for the room it’s going into, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

What materials do you use?

We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. Your quote sets out the materials.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We talk it through at the measuring visit.

How do I get a quote?

The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
