Alcove units in Nash

How we make alcove units for Nash

We fit alcove units across Bromley and the rest of London. It starts with a design visit, where we measure the alcoves and go through the design. After that we send a written quote; the units are then made at our workshop and fitted in your home. Most enquiries start with furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove and walls too uneven for standard furniture, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Nash, so that layout is worth knowing well. Alcove units usually go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear, though every room is measured first.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Common questions about alcove units

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Nash?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

I live near Hayes (Kent) station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How do I get a quote for alcove units in Nash?

Simply message us from the contact page. Rough sizes and a few pictures help, and we will arrange a design visit.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, message us from the contact page.

Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?

Yes. We measure each alcove carefully at the design visit, make the units in our workshop and trim the edges on site to meet the wall, which closes the gaps you’d see with standard furniture.

How is the price worked out?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • The width and height of the space
  • How square the room is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Before the design visit

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Flats, leases and landlords

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

When you need someone else

Not everything around alcove units is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Taking out a chimney breast or opening up a fireplace
  • Finding and fixing the cause of damp
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator

Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Why bespoke in Nash?

A bespoke unit takes longer to arrive than something from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and time in the workshop. In return, the unit is planned for your alcove alone, not the nearest catalogue size. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Why us?

  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • We visit, measure and go through the design before we quote
  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it is worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves, go through the design and check the route from the street to the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the alcoves and scribe them to the walls.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Advice

Nash homes and alcove units

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 69% of the housing in the area around Nash, with about 12% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Nash, Historic England’s list includes Priors Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile north-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Bromley has its own. Where a street in Nash is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

Down House, about 2.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. For an older house near Keston Parish Church, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. For a family home near Wickham Common Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.
