How we make fitted wardrobes for BR2
Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and mismatched bedroom furniture.
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
- We come to measure and talk through the design, including the doors and the finish.
- We send a quote in writing.
- The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
What goes into your quote
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit.

Bedroom storage across BR2
From Chislehurst, Plaistow and Shortlands to the quieter streets, bedrooms across BR2 range from box rooms to large rooms with bays. Fitted wardrobes are made for the room you have, using the full height where it helps. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.
In BR2, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 30%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Around a third of the homes in the BR2 postcode district (about 30%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 46% of households in BR2 live in detached or semi-detached houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
Homes across BR2 range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a written quote, then making and fitting.
Bromley: If you live in a flat close to Bromley South station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Peter and St Paul, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
When you need someone else
We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Structural changes to the room
- Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
Flats, conversions and lettings
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
Do you need fitted wardrobes?
Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes spill onto chairs, into spare rooms and under the bed. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall, which adds a lot of space without taking more floor.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
- An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
- Too little room for clothes
- Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
What affects the price in BR2
There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The width and height of the space
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Before the design visit
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Questions from BR2
Is the furniture made to order?
Each piece is built in our workshop for the room it is going into, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
What materials do you use?
We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?
We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. In a leasehold flat, it is worth checking the lease first.
How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in BR2?
It is easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
