Built-in Bookshelves in Carshalton

In Carshalton, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. We design your built-in bookcase at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Books piled on the floor
  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste

Built-in bookshelves designed for your room

Built-in bookshelves in Carshalton

Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. People normally come to us about low shelves children can reach and bookshelves in keeping with an older house, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Carshalton, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. That leaves room for built-in bookshelves in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Questions from Carshalton

Is Carshalton in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, Carshalton is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Sutton and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Carshalton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

Some or all of them can be adjustable. We usually keep some shelves fixed for strength.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so check it or ask your managing agent.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

We check how the wall is built during the design visit. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.

What built-in bookshelves cannot fix

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How it works.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Carshalton?

Children’s books, toys and games often need a home too. We can plan low shelves they can reach and higher shelves for later.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

How to choose a carpenter in London

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

A row of standard bookcases rarely fills a wall, and against an uneven wall the gaps are obvious. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall usually ends with a gap, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the bookshelves, for you to look over.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

Before fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

How to get a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, for an even, factory-like finish.

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we usually scribe the sides and the top. It’s what makes shelving look part of the room.
