Bespoke kitchens for homes in Carshalton
We’re carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe engineer and electrics by your electrician, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. Typical reasons to get in touch are a central island in a larger kitchen and a kitchen planned around your appliances; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Around Carshalton, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses started with a small kitchen at the back that has since been extended or knocked through. A bespoke kitchen can be planned around the room as it is now.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Questions we’re often asked
Does a conservation area in or near Carshalton affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is Carshalton in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?
Yes. Carshalton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Sutton and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
What does a bespoke kitchen cost?
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Every kitchen is different, so we price it after the design visit. To get started, use our contact form.
Can I have a kitchen island?
If there is enough room, yes. There has to be comfortable space on every side, and we check this at the measuring visit. If the room is narrow, we will suggest other layouts.
What are your kitchens made from?
Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours you choose.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Ready-made ranges rarely include a larder or dresser that fits a particular alcove. Bespoke joinery can be made for the exact space, painted to match the rest of the kitchen. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit.

What happens on fitting day
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
- At the design visit we measure up and plan the cabinets around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose.
- You receive a quote in writing for the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing, gas and electrics are not part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
- We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and a Gas Safe engineer.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Tell us about parking near your home
Starting with a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Before and after fitting day
A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Let us know how parking works on your street
- Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early
- Treat new paintwork gently at first
Hand-painted kitchens are easy to touch up. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth. It is worth keeping a record of the colours used.
Talk to your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register early. Their work and ours need to fit together, and it’s easier when everyone works from the same design.
The problems bespoke kitchens solve
Many people come to us because a standard kitchen does not suit their room. Standard units are made in fixed sizes, and the gaps get filled with panels. A bespoke kitchen is made to the room instead.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- A layout for a small or tricky room
- Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
- More storage in a small kitchen
- Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
Near listed buildings like The Old Rectory, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Carshalton, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Before you hire any carpenter
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- A written quote that sets out the job

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix
We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Painting the walls around the kitchen
- Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
- New sockets or circuits
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 74 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Carshalton. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.
