How we make fitted cupboards for Harmondsworth

Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. Most enquiries start with somewhere for coats, shoes and bags and storage for towels and bedding, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Harmondsworth, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the fitted cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

What fitted cupboards cannot fix

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Electrical work inside the cupboard
  • Moving or servicing a boiler
  • Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it’s made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Ventilated doors
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made cupboards are usually made from chipboard with a printed or plastic finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in a colour you choose, finished to suit the room. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Why us?

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Over 300 projects completed

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Fitted cupboards for homes in Harmondsworth

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Harmondsworth were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 34%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Harmondsworth is in the Harmondsworth Village Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Around a third of the homes in the area around Harmondsworth (about 34%) were built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so fitted cupboards add storage that was never built in, fixed to suit concrete, block or brick.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary, less than half a mile north of the centre of Harmondsworth, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For a family home near Harmondsworth Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live in a flat close to Heathrow Terminal 5 Rail station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Questions we’re often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you cover homes near Heathrow Terminal 5 Rail station?

Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. That is one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What are your cupboards made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Practical tips

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit
  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Leave room in front of the meters

We adjust the doors as part of the fitting. Houses move a little with the seasons, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. If a door catches, it is usually a small hinge adjustment.

At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.
