How we make alcove units for Harmondsworth

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Units can be cut around them, stop just below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. A plinth can be set to line up with the skirting for a tidy line around the room. These details are settled when we visit, before anything is made. Most enquiries start with shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess and clutter with nowhere to go; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A house from between the wars typically has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of alcove units are set to match. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Harmondsworth, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the alcove unit designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

Honest limits

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
  • Taking out a chimney breast or opening up a fireplace
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Scribed side panels
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Think about how the units meet the picture rail and cornice
  • Have any damp looked at before the units are made
  • Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
  • Note any vent or air brick on the chimney breast

Do not let stored things block the chimney breast vent. Ventilation helps keep the chimney breast dry, which protects the units too.

Avoid placing a heater hard up against the units.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Common questions about alcove units

I live near Heathrow Terminal 5 Rail station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make alcove units for homes in Harmondsworth?

Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London, and Harmondsworth is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

How long will the fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Most of the making happens in our workshop.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

Which finishes are there for alcove units?

We offer spray painting in the workshop and hand painting on site. A sprayed finish is very smooth and even; a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later. We’ll help you choose at the measuring visit.

Can you build alcove units for alcoves that are not square?

Yes. Each alcove is measured at the measuring visit, make the units in our workshop and trim the edges on site to meet the wall.

Fitting day, step by step

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the chimney breast and alcoves.
  2. At the design visit we measure each alcove at several heights, because period walls are rarely flat or square.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the units, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
  5. On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Arranging a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Do you need alcove units in Harmondsworth?

Many people ask about alcove units because the alcoves are the most obvious wasted space they have. Standard furniture seldom fits an alcove, leaving gaps at the sides and above. Built-in units use the whole recess from wall to wall.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves
  • Everyday clutter left on show
  • Furniture that does not fit the alcove
  • Shelving for books and records

For a family home near Harmondsworth Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
