How we make fitted wardrobes for Hillingdon

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, scribed to follow the uneven walls. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. Typical reasons to get in touch are too little room for clothes and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
  3. A written quote follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across Hillingdon

From Ruislip, Hayes and Yeading to the quieter streets, bedrooms across Hillingdon range from box rooms to large rooms with bays. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. The inside layout is planned around your things.

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 37% of the housing in Hillingdon, with about 25% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Around a third of the homes in Hillingdon (about 37%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. A quarter or more of the homes in Hillingdon (about 25%) were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.

We cover the whole of London, so homes in Hillingdon are well within our area. Tell us about access and parking when you first get in touch.

Ruislip: The wider area includes historic houses such as Ickenham Hall, about 1.7 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. For a family home near Warrender Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

When is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the doors come to your home finished. Treat them gently while the paint cures fully.

Plinths and scribe strips

In period rooms, we usually scribe the sides and the top. It is what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Empty the area where we’ll be working
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Think about where you’ll keep shoes, bags and folded clothes

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them instead of crowding one section. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe are not blocked, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and deal with any damp early.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

What to check before you book

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Questions we are often asked

Do you work in Hillingdon?

Yes. We work across Hillingdon, and the process is the same everywhere we go.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls so the doors close neatly.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

We plan it with you at the measuring visit, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.

What materials do you use?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes, and the quote says which is used where.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
