Harmondsworth Wall Beds

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make wall beds for homes in Harmondsworth, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • More floor space in a studio flat

About our wall beds in Harmondsworth

Safety starts with the fixing: the mechanism is fixed as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that’s sound enough to hold it. We check the wall and floor at the measuring visit as solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings. If you’re living with a studio that works by day and night and a proper bed instead of a sofa bed, that is what wall beds are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Harmondsworth, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. We start with what the room is for, day and night.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and discuss the design.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and any storage around it.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop.
  5. The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Practical tips

Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch in if the cabinet gets a knock. Spray-painted finishes clean easily with a soft cloth and keep their smooth look.

Think about the route into the room. Furniture made in a workshop comes in sections sized for stairs, landings and lifts, so let us know about narrow stairs or a small lift.

FAQs: wall beds in Harmondsworth

Does a conservation area in or near Harmondsworth affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Harmondsworth?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

When you need someone else

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Supplying mattresses

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Bedroom storage in Harmondsworth

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Harmondsworth were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 34%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Harmondsworth is in the Harmondsworth Village Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Around a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Harmondsworth (about 34%) were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Post-war bedrooms are usually simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.

If you live in a flat close to Heathrow Terminal 5 Rail station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Mary, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. For a family home near Harmondsworth Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
