Need TV and media units in Chingford Mount?
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
TV and media units in Chingford Mount: what you get
We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. You choose a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you prefer. We work across London, including Chingford Mount, after a design visit and a written quote. People usually come to us about standard units leaving gaps and set-top boxes stacked on a stand; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Chingford Mount, so it is a layout worth planning for. TV and media units usually go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Questions we are often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Highams Park station?
Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Chingford Mount?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?
We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with openings and access panels. Where the cables meet the wall depends on where the sockets are, and your electrician can move them if needed.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Honest limits
We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Connecting and setting up your equipment
- Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
- Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Living-room carpentry in Chingford Mount: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Chingford Mount were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 13%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Chingford Mount include Church of All Saints (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and Church of St Edmund (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Waltham Forest sets its own rules. Where a street in Chingford Mount is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
For families living near Lime Academy Larkswood, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. If you live near The Highams Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. For an older house near St Edmund's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

What happens on fitting day
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

Advice
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
What it is made from
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish suits a TV unit in a period room. The colour is agreed with you.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for panels, doors and the faces you see.
