TV and media units for your home in Highams Park

How we make TV and media units for Highams Park

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places. That is work for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. It’s best done before we fit. People typically come to us about equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Plenty of semis and interwar houses have been extended at the back or had the back rooms knocked through, which matters around Highams Park, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, TV and media units can run the full length of one wall, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

Ask for a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

How we price TV and media units

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • How big the furniture is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Approximate measurements of the space

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought units often have a single cable gap, but cables normally still show somewhere. A built-in unit has routes planned through it, with access left for later changes. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Living-room carpentry in Highams Park: local notes

In the area around Highams Park, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 42%) and before 1919 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 45% of households in the streets around Highams Park live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, and TV and media units are made to those widths. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Waltham Forest is no exception. If your street in Highams Park is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Bruce Castle, about 2.6 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live near Lloyd Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If you live in a flat close to Highams Park station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Highams Park is part of the London Borough of Waltham Forest, about 1 mile south of Walthamstow. Anywhere in Highams Park, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We cover places right across Waltham Forest.

We work across the E4, E17 and IG8 postcode area for TV and media units. We cover homes on streets such as May Road, Adam Road and Cecil Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want TV and media units or another piece made for the room. We also cover South Chingford (1 mile north-west), Hale End (1 mile east), Chingford Mount (1 mile north), Chingford Hatch (1 mile north-east) and Chingford (1 mile north). We also make TV and media units in nearby places like Leyton (3 miles south), Bakers Arms (2 miles south), Walthamstow Village (2 miles south), Leytonstone (3 miles south-east), Holloway Down (4 miles south) and Bushwood Area of Leytonstone (3 miles south-east).

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Note the size of each box and speaker
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
  • Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote

When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned rather than drilling new holes. It keeps the unit tidy.

Do not stack boxes on top of each other in one space, as they trap each other’s heat. Give each its own space.

Questions from Highams Park

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Highams Park?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Highams Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

That is the aim, and it is planned from the start. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later without taking the unit apart. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Keep the vents clear once it’s in use.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, message us from the contact page.
