TV and media units in Walthamstow
Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If the TV stands on the unit instead, the top is sized and positioned for it, with the cables kept out of sight. Typical reasons to get in touch are set-top boxes stacked on a stand and bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and TV and media units need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Walthamstow went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

How fitting works for TV and media units
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and your equipment, including the size of the screen.
- We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
- You receive a written quote setting out the unit, materials and finish.
- We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
- We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.
How to prepare
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Arranging a design visit
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Caring for painted furniture
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen
- Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
- Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, place equipment gently rather than sliding it, so the paint isn’t scuffed.
Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit.
How it is made
Doors and drawer fronts
Cupboard doors keep equipment out of sight and are planned with ventilation where needed.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves for heavy speakers and amplifiers.

What else we make in Walthamstow
TV and media units in Walthamstow: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Walthamstow were built before 1919 (about 56%) and since 2000 (about 23%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Walthamstow. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 56% of homes in the area around Walthamstow were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. In houses of that age, the chimney breast often becomes the TV wall, with cupboards in the alcoves for set-top boxes and speakers.
For a flat near Walthamstow Central station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 2.4 miles west. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If your children go to Greenleaf Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
Walthamstow is in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. From period terraces to newer flats in Walthamstow, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Across Waltham Forest, we cover Walthamstow, along with the rest of the borough.
Every home in E17, E4, IG8 and E10 is covered for TV and media units. You will find streets here like High Street, Church Road and Wigram Square, and we cover homes on all of them for TV and media units. Walthamstow sits close to the A104 and A112. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Close by, we also work in Walthamstow Village (1 mile south-east), Warner Estate (1 mile north), Bakers Arms (1 mile south-east), Higham Hill (1 mile north-west) and Upper Walthamstow (1 mile east). Across the rest of Waltham Forest, our area takes in Leyton (2 miles south-east), Chingford (3 miles north), Leytonstone (2 miles south-east), Holloway Down (3 miles south-east), Bushwood Area of Leytonstone (2 miles south-east) and Hale End (2 miles north-east). Being one of the larger places in Waltham Forest, Walthamstow is covered for all of our fitted furniture.

Why bespoke in Walthamstow?
TVs keep getting bigger, and a stand that suits today’s set may look small with the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind, so the unit lasts longer. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Questions from Walthamstow
Does a conservation area in or near Walthamstow affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do you cover homes near Walthamstow Central station?
Yes, homes across Waltham Forest and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is there room for a soundbar?
Speakers work best in open spaces rather than behind doors. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The fitting depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop.
What affects the price in Walthamstow
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.
Getting in touch
Ahead of the design visit, we will typically ask about:
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
