Fitted furniture in E4

Our area takes in all of the E4 postcode district, including Chingford, Hale End and Chingford Hatch. Every job starts with a design visit, then a written quote, and the furniture is made in our workshop.

About fitted wardrobes in E4

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it, which helps keep mould away. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and clothes with nowhere proper to go.

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

How our quotes work

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

Fitted wardrobes across E4: local notes

Across E4, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. The design follows the room, not a catalogue, with the inside laid out around what you keep.

The biggest shares of homes in the E4 postcode district were built before 1919 (about 31%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. A quarter or more of the homes in E4 (about 29%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. Terraced houses are home to about 30% of households in E4, according to Census 2021. London terraces usually have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, both good spaces for fitted storage.

Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so we look at both during the design visit.

Chingford: Near listed buildings like Church of All Saints, about 0.5 miles west of the centre of Chingford, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near All Saints' Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted or hand painted. Bespoke work isn’t as quick as buying from a shop, because of the design visit, the quote and the making.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Will the quote be in writing?

What we don’t do

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role without crowding the floor. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.

People typically get in touch with us about things like these:

  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through.

Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Let us know which walls face outside
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand

Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, open and close the doors gently.

Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns tricky space into storage.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

The time on site depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. We send a written quote after the design visit.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it is useful to be around at the end.
