Under-stairs storage in South Street

We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in South Street and fitted. If your home has a low corner too deep to reach into and nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A good part of the housing around South Street is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in South Street

In a smaller home, every bit of space counts. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It also takes pressure off the other cupboards in the house.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work

If you live in a flat close to Oxted station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Questions from South Street

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Oxted station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in South Street?

Yes. South Street is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?

Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, usually behind its own door. Meter readers and engineers need access, so we never box them in.

Can you match the storage to my hallway?

Yes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it sits quietly in the hall.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What it’s made from

Pull-out drawers

Deep drawers on runners let you use the low end of the space without crawling in. Each one is sized for what it will hold. Many designs use a run of drawers stepping down with the stairs.

Moisture-resistant MDF

With wet shoes and coats coming in, a moisture-resistant grade of MDF is a sensible choice. It gives the painted fronts a smooth base, and it holds its shape in the space under the stairs.

Fitted storage in South Street

In the area around South Street, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of South Street, Historic England’s list includes Cottage Orne (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in South Street is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

For a family home near Charles Darwin School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. The wider area includes historic houses such as Titsey Place, about 2.1 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

South Street is part of the London Borough of Bromley, about 6 miles north of Orpington. Whether your home in South Street is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. South Street is one of 49 places on our list for Bromley.

In TN16, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We also make under-stairs storage in nearby places such as Orpington (6 miles north), Bromley (7 miles north), Beckenham (8 miles north-west), St Mary Cray (7 miles north), Chislehurst (8 miles north) and Shortlands (7 miles north).

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about the space under your stairs. It’s useful to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use.

Arranging a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Pricing under-stairs storage in South Street

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How big the furniture is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Before the design visit

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
