How we make fitted cupboards for South Street

Hallways in London homes are often long and narrow, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. A shallow cupboard can hold coats, shoes and bags without blocking the way, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option, so there’s somewhere to sit by the door. People usually come to us about built-in storage that matches the woodwork and tidying away the gas and electricity meters, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around South Street, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Making use of awkward spaces in South Street

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around South Street were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of South Street, Historic England’s list includes Cottage Orne (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 76% of households in the area around South Street live in detached or semi-detached houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

If your children go to Charles Darwin School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. For a flat near Oxted station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

South Street is within the London Borough of Bromley, about 6 miles north of Orpington. South Street is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We cover places right across Bromley, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Design visits and fitting in TN16 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We also make fitted cupboards in nearby places like Orpington (6 miles north), Bromley (7 miles north), Beckenham (8 miles north-west), St Mary Cray (7 miles north), Chislehurst (8 miles north) and Shortlands (7 miles north).

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Alcoves and odd corners are another reason. We often build into recesses, corridor ends and corners that standard furniture cannot use, and make them useful.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • Making use of an awkward alcove or corner
  • Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving

Titsey Place, about 2.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.

What to check before you book

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

How to choose a carpenter in London

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

How we price fitted cupboards

There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How big the furniture is

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What to send when you get in touch

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in South Street

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in South Street?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Oxted station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?

Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. That is one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.
  3. You receive a written quote for the cupboards.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Caring for painted furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Tell us about parking at the measuring visit
  • Do not store things against the boiler
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early

Keep the way to the meters and fuse board clear. Avoid packing things in front of the meters, so engineers and meter readers can get to them quickly.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, but it is worth doing before the design is agreed.
