Alcove units in Belgravia
Built-in living-room furniture in Belgravia
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Belgravia were built before 1919 (about 60%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 21 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Belgravia. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. A van working in Belgravia will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.
For families living near Holy Trinity CofE Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live in a flat close to London Victoria station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of Holy Trinity, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Belgravia is about 1 mile north of City of Westminster, part of the City of Westminster. Whether your home in Belgravia is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our Westminster coverage includes Belgravia and the places around it.
We cover every part of SW3, SW1X and SW1W for alcove units. We cover homes on streets like Hans Road, Eaton Lane and Gerald Road, whether you want alcove units or another piece made for the room. The A3214 and A3217 runs close to Belgravia; on busy main roads, unloading alcove units takes a little planning. We also cover Brompton (1 mile south-west), Victoria (1 mile south-east), Chelsea (1 mile south-west), Pimlico (1 mile south-east) and Westminster (1 mile east). Elsewhere in Westminster, we also cover Covent Garden (2 miles north-east), Aldwych (2 miles north-east), Adelphi (2 miles north-east), Paddington Green (2 miles north-west), Paddington (2 miles north-west) and Lisson Grove (2 miles north).
Around Belgravia
We fit furniture in homes around Star Tavern, Saint Thomas More Language College and Inchbald School of Design. Belgravia’s nearest station is London Victoria station, about 0.5 miles south-east. Other landmarks nearby include Health Exhibition Centre (a few minutes’ walk south-east) and London Lock Hospital (a few minutes’ walk north-east). Not far away are Serpentine.
Alcove units in Belgravia
Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are common in older rooms. Units can be cut around them, stop just below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. The plinth height can match the skirting so the units feel part of the room. We agree these details at the measuring visit, before anything is made. If you are living with room to work in an alcove and cupboards in keeping with an older house, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Belgravia, lots of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Moisture-resistant MDF
With no grain to show through, MDF keeps the painted surface smooth and even. Moisture-resistant MDF is what we use for fitted work.
Shelves
We set shelf spacing around what you own. A shallower top shelf can keep things within reach.
When is bespoke worth it?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Flats, conversions and lettings
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.
From workshop to your room
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so it helps to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty.
- We visit to measure the alcoves, go through the design and check the route from the street to the room. It’s useful to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
- On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls.
How to prepare
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
How to get a quote
To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

Questions from Belgravia
Is Belgravia in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes, Belgravia is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Westminster and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
I live near London Victoria station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
How long does it take to fit alcove units?
The time on site depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The units are built in our workshop first, so the work in your home is about fitting and finishing.
How do I get a quote for alcove units in Belgravia?
It’s easiest to send us a few details through our contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Where other trades come in
Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Making good damaged walls before fitting
- Finding and fixing the cause of damp
- Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work
Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you. How it works.
