Wall beds in Belgravia: what you get

You need room in front of the cabinet to lower the bed, and that shapes the design. Furniture in front of the bed has to be easy to move or kept out of the way, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a flexible room for a growing family and a study that doubles as a spare room.

Floors in older houses often slope, and a large share of the homes around Belgravia are that old. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Check there is room for the bed to fold down
  • Think about how often the bed will be used

Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.

If you know the wall’s construction, mention it. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard need different fixings, and we check it during the design visit too.

Belgravia homes and wall beds

Homes built before 1919 make up about 60% of the housing in the area around Belgravia, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Belgravia is in the Belgravia Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. In Belgravia, a van will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

If your children go to Holy Trinity CofE Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live in a flat close to London Victoria station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is one of the older houses near St Peter's Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made wall bed units are available and typically cost less, and in a straightforward room they may be enough. They come in set sizes and finishes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. Ours is made to the room you have. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What affects the price in Belgravia

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The width and height of the space
  • How square the room is

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What the furniture needs to hold

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To book one, use our contact form.

FAQs: wall beds in Belgravia

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Belgravia?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you make wall beds for a home in Belgravia?

Yes, Belgravia is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Westminster and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

The bed needs room in front of it to come down, on top of the cabinet’s own depth. We measure this at the measuring visit, so the design works.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mechanism maker sets which mattresses suit the bed, including its size, depth and weight. We will go through those limits during the design visit so you can choose one that works.

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout.
  3. A written quote is sent to you.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the bed and storage in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Getting ready for fitting day

Advice

Flats, leases and landlords

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
