  • Cleaning things with no proper home
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags

Practical tips

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Empty the cupboard so we can measure every corner
  • Note the things that need a home under the stairs
  • Let us know about parking during the design visit
  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board

Before we leave, we check every drawer and door with you. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. That way, nothing is left for you to sort out later.

Sharp tools and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Put tools in a case so they don’t knock the paint. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Belgravia

When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. A hanging section, shoe drawers and a shelf for keys keep everything off the floor. Painted in a colour you choose, it reads as part of the house rather than a piece of furniture. For a home in Belgravia, it can make the front door feel far calmer. Typical reasons to get in touch are struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter and nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large share of the homes around Belgravia were built before 1919, and older houses have lots of odd corners: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.

  1. You let us know about the space under the stairs.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

Questions from Belgravia

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Belgravia?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Belgravia?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How do I get a quote?

It is easiest to drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Belgravia

About 60% of the homes in the streets around Belgravia went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Belgravia is partly covered by the Belgravia Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. In Belgravia, a van will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Apsley House, about 0.4 miles north. If your own home is a period one, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. Near listed buildings like Church of Holy Trinity, less than half a mile south of the centre of Belgravia, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Belgravia

After a hallway is redecorated, an old, tired cupboard under the stairs can stand out. New storage, painted in a colour chosen for the hall, can tie it together. If decorating is planned, it is worth mentioning at the design visit so the work can be timed sensibly.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall

For an older house near St Peter's Church, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

How to choose a carpenter in London

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf storage is not designed around a meter or a fuse board. Fitted in front of one, it can make access awkward for readings and safety checks. Bespoke storage is planned around them from the start. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting on site lets the storage be finished alongside the woodwork around it. It’s easy to touch up later. Paint needs time to cure fully, so it is best treated gently at first.

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once it is fitted.
