Alcove units for homes in Victoria
We work across London, including Victoria. It starts with a design visit, where we measure the alcoves and go through the design. After that we send a quote in writing; the units are then built in our workshop and fitted in your home. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are a place for a small desk and alcoves that are wasted space.
Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and they set the lines that alcove units have to meet. A large share of the housing around Victoria went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the design visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Questions we are often asked
Is Victoria in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes, Victoria is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Westminster and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
How do you fit alcove units in a flat in Victoria?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Can you fit a desk into an alcove?
Yes. A desk in one alcove, with shelves above and storage below, works well in many rooms. We plan the height and depth with you, with a way planned for cables to reach the sockets.
How do I get started?
It is easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
What prompts alcove units in Victoria
In bedrooms, the alcoves may be the only place for hanging space. Built into the alcove, a cupboard holds clothes without taking over the room, which matters in a smaller room.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- Toys and paperwork with no proper home
- Furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove
- A place for a small desk
- Old alcove cupboards that have seen better days
For a flat near London Victoria station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Before you hire any carpenter
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- A quote in writing that sets out the job

What alcove units cannot fix
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
- Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

Flats, leases and landlords
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.
How fitting day works
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.
- To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the room and the alcoves is enough, and mention if you live in a flat or up a few flights of stairs.
- We visit to measure the alcoves, talk through the design and check the route from the street to the room. Parking is worth mentioning too, since a van often needs a permit or a paid bay in London.
- We then send a written quote for the units.
- In our workshop we build the units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized so each piece gets up the stairs and round the corners.
- On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls.
Preparing the room
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Getting a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Living-room storage in Victoria
About 48% of the homes in the streets around Victoria went up before 1919, and about 18% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 26 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Victoria. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Purpose-built flats are home to about 75% of households in the streets around Victoria, based on Census 2021. For a flat, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live in a period home close to St. Michael's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Buckingham Palace, about 0.4 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.
Victoria is about 1 mile north of City of Westminster, in the City of Westminster. Victoria is part of the area we cover. In Westminster, Victoria is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 29 places on our list.
Every address in SW1V, SW1P and SW1X is within our area for alcove units, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Whether you live on a street such as Eaton Lane, Gerald Road and Wilton Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for alcove units. Victoria sits close to the A202 and A302. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover Belgravia (1 mile north-west), Pimlico (1 mile south-east), Westminster (1 mile north-east), Millbank (1 mile north-east) and Brompton (1 mile west). Elsewhere in Westminster, we also cover Marylebone (2 miles north), Covent Garden (2 miles north-east), Aldwych (2 miles north-east), Paddington Green (2 miles north-west), Paddington (2 miles north-west) and Connaught Village (2 miles north-west).
Landmarks near Victoria
We fit furniture in homes around Westminster Cathedral Choir School, London Library and Wetherspoons pub and the streets around them. There is a railway station in Victoria itself: London Victoria station. Nearby you’ll also find Harrods (0.9 miles west) and Westminster Children's Hospital (under half a mile south-east). For a walk, there is St. James's Park Lake.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
