How we make fitted wardrobes for SW1X

We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. Most enquiries start with a room too narrow for hinged doors and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, and we arrange a design visit.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out, so you can see what’s included.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

How our quotes work

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Homes across SW1X and their bedrooms

In SW1X, a spare room often doubles as a study or a guest room. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them.

About 63% of the homes in the SW1X postcode district went up before 1919, and about 13% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 63% of homes in SW1X were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Older bedrooms usually have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use. About 61% of households in SW1X live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so the way in is measured along with the room.

Knightsbridge: Near listed buildings like Apsley House, about 0.5 miles east of the centre of Knightsbridge, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to Hellenic College of London or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

When you need someone else

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time

With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then to keep them running smoothly. Clear anything that falls into it.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear, especially where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and deal with any damp early.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions. The slope is measured during the design visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.

Do you make good the walls afterwards?

No. We do not plaster or decorate. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.

Is the furniture made to order?

Everything is made in our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. It is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We plan it with you when we visit.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls, so the doors line up properly.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
