Living-room storage in Fish Island

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Fish Island were built since 2000 (about 49%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Fish Island. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If your children go to Mossbourne Riverside Academy or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. Close to Grove Hall Park? Alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

How we make alcove units for Fish Island

We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, chosen part by part. MDF suits doors and panels because it paints so evenly, and birch plywood is strong for shelves and carcasses. You can have a spray-painted finish from the workshop or a hand-painted one done on site, in the colour you choose. Most enquiries start with alcoves that aren’t square and units that sit well with original features; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Many homes around Fish Island have been built since 2000, and in a newer home the living space is normally open-plan, without a chimney breast. So alcove units often give the room its shape, along a full wall or around the TV. Many internal walls in newer homes are plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What alcove units cannot fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Any structural work on the chimney breast
  • Treating damp in the chimney breast or walls

Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Scribed side panels
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Is it time for alcove units?

Many people ask about alcove units because the alcoves are the most obvious wasted space they have. Off-the-shelf furniture rarely fits them, leaving gaps at the sides and above. Built-in units use the whole recess up to the ceiling if you want.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • A desk that tucks into an alcove
  • Units that sit well with original features
  • Space for a growing book collection
  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves

The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 1.3 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. You tell us which room it is and roughly what you’d like in the alcoves, even if the design is only a rough idea so far.
  2. We visit to measure, look at how the walls run and note the skirting, picture rail and any vent.
  3. You receive a quote with the design, the materials and the paint finish.
  4. Once you are happy, the units are built in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the units go in, are scribed to the alcoves and levelled on a plinth or feet.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Fish Island?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can the two alcove units be different?

That depends on how you use the room. Alcoves are often different widths anyway, so each unit is made to its own measurements. They can match in style while doing different jobs.

Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?

We design around any vent so it stays open. Ventilation helps keep a capped chimney dry, which protects the units as well as the wall. Any existing damp should be dealt with before the units go in.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How do I get started?

It is easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

What affects the price in Fish Island

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The overall size of the piece

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Getting in touch

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it’s useful to send:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Your postcode and the borough

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?

The depth of an alcove is set by the chimney breast. A shop-bought cabinet may stick out past the chimney breast or leave a deep gap behind it. Bespoke units are made to the depth you want, whether that is flush with the breast or a little shallower. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It still uses the full height.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
