Fitted wardrobes across E3: what to expect
Doors can be hinged or sliding. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and clothes with nowhere proper to go.
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
- A quote in writing follows.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.
Quotes in E3
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

How to get a quote
It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Near you in Mile End
The streets we cover here include those near Holy Trinity Church, Malmesbury Primary School and Lord Tredegar Public House and the streets around them. Nearby too are Mile End Park (less than half a mile west) and Beatrice Tate School (under half a mile south-east). Mile End’s nearest station is Limehouse station, roughly 0.9 miles south. A little further out are Westfield Stratford City (1.7 miles north-east) and St Clement's Hospital (close by, under half a mile north-east). Open spaces near Mile End include Old Ford Island.
Fitted wardrobes for homes across E3
From Stratford, Hackney and Bethnal Green to the quieter streets, bedrooms across E3 range from box rooms to large rooms with bays. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.
Homes built since 2000 make up about 44% of the housing in E3, with about 20% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 44% of homes in the E3 postcode district were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board. About 73% of households in the E3 postcode district live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
We cover the whole of London, so homes in E3 are well within our area. Tell us about access and parking when you first get in touch.
Mile End: Near listed buildings like Phoenix School, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Mile End, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Limehouse station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, so there’s usually a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
Before and after fitting day
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
- List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes
- Let us know which walls face outside
- Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff to keep them running smoothly. Don’t let shoes or bags sit in the track.
Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads.
What we don’t do
We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:
- Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
- Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
Flats, conversions and lettings
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.
What it is made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
Wardrobe doors are large, so stability matters. MDF gives a flat, smooth surface that paints well, whether the doors are plain or panelled.
Hanging rails
We place rails at the heights your clothes need: a high rail for long items and double rails for shorter ones.
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in E3
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. Plastering and decorating aren’t part of our work. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?
We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls so the doors close neatly.
How is the price worked out?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
