Fitted wardrobes in E9: how it works
In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. Typical reasons to get in touch are a room too narrow for hinged doors and space under the eaves going to waste; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room.
- We come to measure and talk through the design, including the doors and the finish.
- We send a written quote.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
Quotes in E9
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

Fitted wardrobes across E9: local notes
From Homerton, Cambridge Heath and Hackney Central to the quieter streets, bedrooms across E9 range from box rooms to large rooms with bays. Fitted wardrobes are made for the room you have, using the full height where it helps. The inside layout is planned around your things.
In the E9 postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 30%) and before 1919 (about 28%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. About 30% of homes in E9 were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board. Purpose-built flats are home to about 63% of households in E9, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in E9, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a quote in writing, then making and fitting.
Hackney: If you live near Clapton Park, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. Near listed buildings like Church of St John of Jerusalem, under half a mile south of the centre of Hackney, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
When you need someone else
We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Structural changes to the room
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
- Building work to create a loft room
Could you do it yourself?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Tips worth knowing
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Work out the split between long and short hanging
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
- Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
Do not pack clothes tight against the back panel where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. A little airflow helps keep damp at bay.
Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose.
Is bespoke worth it?
Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.
Before you hire any carpenter
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- A written quote that sets out the job
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
Questions we’re often asked
Should I send photos?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The time on site depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Do you work outside London?
No. We work in London and nowhere else.
Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?
It is worked out with you when we measure, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.
How do I get a quote?
The first step is to drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
