Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.

How we make fitted wardrobes for Fish Island

Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet. Typical reasons to get in touch are a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and damp or musty clothes against an external wall, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a compact bedroom, the swing of hinged doors can clash with the bed, so the layout and the kind of door are worked out together. Many homes around Fish Island were built since 2000, and bedrooms in newer homes are often compact. We measure the space in front as well as the wall.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Why bespoke in Fish Island?

Standalone wardrobes cost less to buy and can come with you when you move. If you are renting or moving soon, that may matter most. Fitted wardrobes stay with the room, and are planned to suit it. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves awkward gaps, and fitted furniture uses that space. It works around service boxing too.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Questions from Fish Island

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Fish Island?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Fish Island is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near Fish Island affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in Fish Island?

It’s easiest to send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions and fitted storage suits them well. We measure the slope carefully at the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Drawers get heavy use, so we often make the boxes from birch plywood, so they hold their shape.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It suits bedrooms where the wardrobe sits on an external wall.

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so let us know what applies during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You send us some details about the room and the storage you need.
  2. We visit to measure the room and talk through the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Bedroom storage in Fish Island

About 49% of the homes in the streets around Fish Island went up since 2000, and about 22% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The Fish Island Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Fish Island. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home in Fish Island is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.3 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For families living near Mossbourne Riverside Academy, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live near Grove Hall Park, fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Fish Island is about 3 miles south-west of Whitechapel, within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Design visits and fitting in Fish Island can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. Fish Island is one of the places in Tower Hamlets where we make fitted wardrobes.

In E3, E9 and E20, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need

If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff. Clear anything that falls into it.

Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut, as the extra moisture can lead to condensation. Opening a window now and then helps.
