Alcove units in Green Street Green
Alcove units in Green Street Green: what you get
We fit alcove units across Bromley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. Then you receive a quote, and once you are happy the units are built in our workshop and fitted in your home. If you are living with a place for a small desk and old alcove cupboards that have seen better days, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Green Street Green, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits alcove units along that wall. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned during the design visit.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting works for alcove units
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You get in touch and describe the alcoves you want to fill.
- We visit to measure the alcoves top, middle and bottom, and check the floor for level.
- You get a quote in writing for the units, materials and finish.
- In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
- On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
Getting a quote
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, use our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Common questions about alcove units
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Green Street Green?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Is Green Street Green in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes, Green Street Green is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Can an alcove unit include a desk?
Yes. One alcove can take a desk with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard beneath. We plan the height and depth with you.
Why bespoke in Green Street Green?
Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set heights, so there is often wasted space overhead. We can take a bespoke unit to the ceiling or stop it at the picture rail, whichever looks right in your room. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall normally ends with a gap, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

The problems alcove units solve
A bedroom’s alcoves are often the best place for a wardrobe. Built into the alcove, a cupboard holds clothes without taking over the room, which helps in a small bedroom.
Here’s what alcove units can help with:
- Units that sit well with original features
- Furniture that does not fit the alcove
- Walls too uneven for standard furniture
- Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
For an older house near St Mary's Church, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.
What to check before you book
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How doors and drawers are fitted
Flats, conversions and lettings
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit.
