About our built-in bookshelves in Green Street Green
The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. If you are living with bowing shelves in an old bookcase and alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Green Street Green, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits built-in bookshelves along that wall. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned at the design visit.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

Why bespoke in Green Street Green?
A standalone bookcase needs to be fixed to the wall for safety anyway, so the difference is smaller than it seems. What changes is the fit, the shelf strength and the finish. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

How it is made
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting is done in the workshop, for an even, factory-like finish on shelves and uprights.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is stiff and strong, which makes it our usual choice for long or heavily loaded shelves. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Green Street Green
Is parking a problem for fitting in Green Street Green?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chelsfield station?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?
It’s possible with some thought. Heat needs space to escape, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Often the better answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or have your plumber move it.
What happens at the design visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
How do you stop shelves from sagging?
Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. Long spans get a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip, a support or shorter bays. Tell us about heavy collections at the design visit.
How much will my built-in bookcase cost?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Chelsfield Hall Farmhouse, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around.
