Alcove units for your home in Lower Clapton
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.
Alcove units in Lower Clapton
Most Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses have a chimney breast in the main rooms, with an alcove on each side. Built-in alcove units put that space to work as cupboards and shelving that sit as part of the room. If your home in Lower Clapton has alcoves like these, each alcove gets a unit designed for it after we’ve measured them at a design visit. People typically come to us about toys and paperwork with no proper home and walls too uneven for standard furniture, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Most households around Lower Clapton live in purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to modern developments. In a mansion block flat, the living room may still have a chimney breast and alcoves, and walls that are far from flat, while a newer flat is more likely to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan room. Either way, alcove units are made for the room as it is.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting works for alcove units
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured along with the room itself: alcove units are made in sections sized for each of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty, and mention if you live in a flat or up a few flights of stairs.
- We visit to measure the alcoves, go through the design and check the route from the street to the room. Parking is worth mentioning too, since a van often needs a permit or a paid bay in London.
- We then send a written quote for the units.
- In our workshop we build the units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized so each piece gets up the stairs and round the corners.
- On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls.
Before we arrive
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Common questions about alcove units
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Homerton station?
Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
I live in a flat in Lower Clapton. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Will alcove units fit if my walls aren’t straight?
Yes. Most period alcoves are out of square in some way, so we scribe each unit to follow the wall. Adjustable feet or a plinth take care of a floor that slopes.
Who moves the sockets behind the alcove units?
That is a job for your electrician. Ideally it is done before fitting, and we can tell you where the units will sit so the sockets end up in the right place. We then plan cut-outs and cable gaps around them.
Can the two alcove units be different?
That’s your choice. A matching pair balances the chimney breast, but many people put a desk or a TV in one alcove and cupboards in the other. Shared details, like the plinth and paint colour, keep them looking related.
Pricing alcove units in Lower Clapton
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Getting in touch
When you contact us, these help most:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
Practical tips
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Have any damp looked at before the units are made
- Mention parking and access when we visit
- Measure anything large that must fit inside, like a record player
- Make the alcoves easy to reach for measuring
Keep a record of the colour so any touch-ups match. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.
If a damp patch appears near a unit, look into it early. The cause is a job for the right trade, not something paint will hide.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
Living-room storage in Lower Clapton
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Lower Clapton were built before 1919 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of Lower Clapton is within about a quarter of a mile of the Clapton Square Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. So a van fitting furniture in Lower Clapton normally needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Near listed buildings like United Reformed Church, under half a mile west of the centre of Lower Clapton, older homes may keep original joinery that alcove units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Millfields Park, alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. For a flat near Homerton station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
