How we make fitted wardrobes for E5
Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you at the design visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and no space in front for doors to swing; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
- A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
What goes into your quote
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Bedroom storage across E5
We make fitted wardrobes for homes across E5, in Homerton, West Hackney and Lower Clapton and beyond. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it is made of.
About 42% of the homes in the E5 postcode district went up before 1919, and about 19% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 42% of homes in E5 were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. About 21% of households in the E5 postcode district live in flats in converted or shared houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and E5 is part of that. Wherever you are, the job starts with a design visit.
Homerton: If your home is one of the older houses near United Reformed Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Near listed buildings like United Reformed Church, under half a mile west of the centre of Homerton, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Looking after your furniture
A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:
- Think about where you’ll keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
- Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
- Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
- Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls
Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line the doors up again, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.
Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. A little ventilation in the room helps.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.
Is bespoke worth it?
Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope, with hanging where it is tall and drawers or shelves where it is low.
What to check before you book
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- How doors and drawers are fitted
Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in E5
A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role without crowding the floor. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.
We are often asked to help with:
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- Not enough hanging space
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
Pricing fitted wardrobes in E5
There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- The number of doors and drawers
- Parking near your home
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
What to send when you get in touch
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in E5
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes, as long as it is ventilated. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we plan airflow behind and within it.
How is the price worked out?
Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a written quote once we’ve measured up.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, use our contact form.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
It is worked out with you when we measure, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. We do not plaster or decorate, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?
It is common, and it’s allowed for. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls so the doors close neatly.
