Alcove units for your home in Lea Bridge
Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?
Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set heights, so there’s often wasted space overhead. A bespoke unit can run up to the ceiling or finish just under the picture rail, whichever looks right in your room. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Alcove units for homes in Lea Bridge
In a tall room, a full-height alcove cupboard holds a great deal. In a bedroom, it can become a small wardrobe or a linen cupboard, while in a dining room it can keep china, glass and table linen. At the design visit we ask what you plan to keep there, and set out the shelves and rails around it. If your home has old alcove cupboards that have seen better days and space for a growing book collection, that’s what alcove units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and alcove units need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Lea Bridge went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the measuring visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What happens on fitting day
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You let us know which room it is and roughly what you’d like in the alcoves.
- We visit to measure, look at how the walls run and note the skirting, picture rail and any vent.
- You receive a quote with the design, the materials and the paint finish.
- The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the units go in, are scribed to the alcoves and levelled on a plinth or feet.
Before fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
How to get a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Advice
What affects the cost of alcove units
Several things affect the price:
- The number of doors and drawers
- Parking near your home
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Before the design visit
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

How it’s made
Shelves
Shelf thickness depends on the span and the load. For a wide span or heavy books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip on the front or a support.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting lets the colour be judged in the room itself as it goes on. It also means any filling around scribed edges is painted in one go.
Honest limits
Not everything around alcove units is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.
What it’s made from
- Scribed side panels
- Birch plywood
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Panelled or flat doors
- Adjustable shelves

In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Matthew, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 1 mile south. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. Close to Millfields Park? Alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

FAQs: alcove units in Lea Bridge
Does a conservation area in or near Lea Bridge affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Lea Bridge?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?
Any vent in the chimney breast is kept clear when we design the units. Even a blocked chimney needs some ventilation to help keep damp away and we design around it.
What happens during the design visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.
Do alcove units need to reach the ceiling?
That depends on the room and what you’d like to store. Units can stop just under the picture rail or run up to the cornice, or run to the ceiling for a built-in look. The height is settled at the design visit.
