Fitted wardrobes across E8: what to expect
Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, keeping long hanging where there is height and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns an awkward corner into storage. Typical reasons to get in touch are wasted space beside the chimney breast and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
- We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
- We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.
Quotes in E8
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit.

Homes across E8 and their bedrooms
Across E8, including Homerton, West Hackney and Canonbury, bedrooms come in every size. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.
About 37% of the homes in E8 went up before 1919, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 20% of households in the E8 postcode district live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first. Purpose-built flats are home to about 59% of households in the E8 postcode district, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
We cover the whole of London, so homes in E8 are well within our area. If you are unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.
Hackney Central: For a flat near London Fields station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Near listed buildings like The New Lansdowne Club, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Hackney Central, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Practical tips
The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:
- Let us know about the lift and stairs in your block
- Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, handle the doors with care.
Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust doors before a rub marks the paint.
Pricing fitted wardrobes in E8
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
Before the design visit
These details help when you contact us:
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.
Do you need fitted wardrobes?
The usual reason is simple: there is not enough storage. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall, so you get more storage from the same floor space.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
- Not enough hanging space
What it is made from
Plinths and scribe strips
The plinth lifts the wardrobe and hides an uneven floor. Its height can be set to match the skirting.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. It is easy to touch up later.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.
FAQs: fitted wardrobes in E8
What if my bedroom floor is not level?
We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls so the doors close neatly.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.
Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. We measure the slope carefully at the measuring visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
How long will the fitting take?
The fitting depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The wardrobes are built in our workshop first before we come to fit them.
