Alcove Units in Luxted
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make alcove units for homes in Luxted, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A place for a small desk
- Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
- Cupboards in keeping with an older house

Alcove units in Luxted: what you get
One alcove can be given over to a desk, with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard below. It gives you a place to work without turning a room into an office. Desk height and depth are agreed with you. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are shelving for books and records and standard units leaving gaps at the sides.
In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Luxted, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan alcove units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light, though every room is measured first.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Alcove units in Luxted: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Luxted, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Luxted include Down House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north, and Luxted Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Bromley included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Luxted is covered by it. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.
For an older house near Church of St Peter and St Paul, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Living in a block of flats near Chelsfield station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For a family home near Cudham Church of England Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.
Luxted is about 5 miles north-east of Orpington, part of the London Borough of Bromley. Homes in Luxted are part of the area we cover for alcove units. In Bromley, Luxted is one of the places we cover.

We also make alcove units in nearby places such as Orpington (5 miles north-east), Bromley (6 miles north), Beckenham (7 miles north-west), St Mary Cray (5 miles north-east), Chislehurst (6 miles north) and Penge (8 miles north-west).

Could you do it yourself?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
How it is made
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site, after the units are fitted. It is easy to touch up later, and it gives a softer, traditional look.
Shelves
Alcove shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the unit, while adjustable ones let you change heights later.
Caring for painted furniture
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Mention parking and access when we visit
- Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
- Think about what you will store before we meet
- Decide whether the units stop at the picture rail or run to the ceiling
Make a note of the paint colour used. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place, and it is useful to keep a little of the paint.
Spread heavy loads and keep the heaviest things on lower shelves. Overloaded shelves are the main cause of sagging, so mention heavy collections when we plan the unit.
Questions from Luxted
Is parking a problem for fitting in Luxted?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chelsfield station?
Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
How much will my alcove unit cost?
Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.
Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?
Any vent in the chimney breast is kept clear when we design the units. A capped or blocked chimney should still be ventilated to help stop damp.
Are alcove units spray painted or hand painted?
Either a spray-painted or a hand-painted finish. A sprayed finish is very smooth and even; a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later. We talk through both during the design visit.
Should both alcoves have the same units?
It’s entirely your choice. The two alcoves are often slightly different sizes. They can share a style while doing different things.
Fitting day, step by step
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.
- You send us a few details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them, and a rough sketch helps if you have one.
- We come to measure the alcoves, look at the walls and agree the design with you, noting the skirting, picture rail and any chimney vent.
- We send a quote in writing for the units, so you can look it over in your own time.
- Each unit is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The units are fitted in your home and scribed to follow the walls, so they sit tight to the chimney breast.
Before we arrive
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Keep pets in another room while we work
How to get a quote
To make a start, message us from the contact page and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

How we price alcove units
What you pay depends on:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- The number of doors and drawers
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Parking near your home
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Helping us understand the room
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:
- How you want to use the space
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
