Fitted wardrobes in Luxted: what you get
In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, scribed to follow the uneven walls. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. If your home has mismatched bedroom furniture and empty alcoves in the bedroom, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Around Luxted, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished.

Questions we’re often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chelsfield station?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Luxted?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?
Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Bedroom storage in Luxted
About 29% of the homes in the streets around Luxted went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 25% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Luxted include Down House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north, and Luxted Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. Where a home in Luxted is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
For a family home near Cudham Church of England Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. For an older house near Church of St Peter and St Paul, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Luxted
For some, it is about a calmer room. A single run of painted doors looks tidier than mixed furniture, and everything has a place behind it.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- Too little room for clothes
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
If you live in a flat close to Chelsfield station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Large flat-pack wardrobes can be hard to build in a small bedroom. Our wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors, then put together in the room. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall typically ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
What happens on fitting day
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.
