Built-in bookshelves for homes in Luxted
Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or we divide the run with uprights. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about books with nowhere left to go and room for a record collection.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Luxted, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. Built-in bookshelves can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

When you need someone else
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Plumbing work around the shelves
Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.
Boards, parts and finishes
- Birch plywood
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Fixed and adjustable shelves
- Cupboards below
Before and after fitting day
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Mention any radiator on the wall
- Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
- Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
- Ask your electrician about sockets early
Make a note of the paint colour used for future touch-ups. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.
Put coasters under anything that holds water to avoid water marks. Dry any spills quickly.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
Fitting day, step by step
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
- Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
- In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
- The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.
How to prepare
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Starting with a design visit
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Questions we are often asked
I live near Chelsfield station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Luxted?
Yes, Luxted is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?
It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall, into sound brick or studs. Where a wall can’t take the load, we will say so.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
We plan the route in during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Built-in bookshelves in Luxted: local notes
About 29% of the homes in the area around Luxted went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 25% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Luxted include Down House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north, and Luxted Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Bromley are set locally. If your street in Luxted is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.
For families living near Cudham Church of England Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live in a flat close to Chelsfield station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For an older house near Church of St Peter and St Paul, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.
