Alcove units designed for your room

Is it time for alcove units?

For some, it is about books, records or a TV. An alcove unit can be shaped around what you own, with each shelf set to suit it.

Here’s what alcove units can help with:

  • Somewhere to keep books and records
  • Old alcove cupboards that have seen better days
  • Walls too uneven for standard furniture
  • Clutter with nowhere to go

For an older house near St Mary's Church, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.

What to check before you book

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

About our alcove units in Sands End

Some alcoves suit a full-height unit, with doors from floor to ceiling. In bedrooms, this often becomes a compact wardrobe or a place for bedding, while in a dining room it can keep china, glass and table linen. At the design visit we ask what you plan to keep there, and set out the shelves and rails around it. Typical reasons to get in touch are cupboards in keeping with an older house and space for a growing book collection; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Most homes around Sands End are purpose-built flats, so the route in is part of the plan. Alcove units are made in sections sized to go up the stairs, into the lift and through the front door, then joined and scribed in the room. A lease can require consent before you fix furniture to the walls, so it is worth checking first.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Alcove units in Sands End: local notes

About 31% of the homes in the area around Sands End went up before 1919, and about 29% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 20 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Sands End. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. That usually means a van in Sands End needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.

For a flat near Imperial Wharf station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near Falconbrook Primary School, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

What alcove units can’t fix

Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we do not do:

  • New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
  • Any structural work on the chimney breast
  • Making good damaged walls before fitting

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Scribed side panels
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

What affects the cost of alcove units

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shelves in some flat-pack furniture are thin and can bow under books. Shelves in a bespoke unit are sized for the span and the load, using birch plywood where strength matters. Still, a decent off-the-shelf unit can be the sensible choice if you are renting or moving soon. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, leaving gaps or crowding a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Your questions about alcove units in Sands End

Do you make alcove units for homes in Sands End?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London, and Sands End is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Sands End?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How long does it take to fit alcove units?

The fitting depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk you through what fitting day involves before we start.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you use our contact form.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the room and the alcoves is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the alcoves and also the way in: the front door, the hall and any stair turns. It helps to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the units.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
  5. On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls.

How to prepare

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
