Bespoke kitchens in Sands End: what you get

Our bespoke kitchens are fitted in Sands End and all over London. It starts with a design visit to measure and go through the layout, then a written quote. The cabinets are built in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. People typically come to us about a kitchen that fits an uneven room and extra cupboard space, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Sands End, so kitchens are often compact or part of an open-plan living room. A bespoke kitchen can use the full width and height of the walls. Everything is built in sections that fit the route into the flat.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

My home in Sands End is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Sands End?

Yes, Sands End is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

What materials do you use for kitchens?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

Will a bespoke kitchen suit my uneven floor?

Yes, it is something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cabinet is scribed and levelled.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Sands End homes and bespoke kitchens

It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Sands End, Historic England’s list includes Old Battersea House (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-east, and Gasholder No 2 (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your street in Sands End joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For a flat near Imperial Wharf station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Imperial Park? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Sands End

Others want the kitchen to suit the age of the house. Painted cabinets, a dresser or a larder can sit well with original features and look as if they belong.

Here’s what bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
  • A larder for food and small appliances
  • A kitchen finished in your colours

If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
  • Share the layout with your other trades
  • Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first

The appliances you have chosen come with their own care instructions, and the worktop you chose will have its own care advice too.

Have any damp sorted before the kitchen goes in. Cabinets against a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on external walls.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.

  1. You let us know about the room and how you use it.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design and storage. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Tell us about parking near your home
