What alcove units cannot fix
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:
- Replastering, which is a plasterer’s job
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Alcove units in World's End: what you get
Few alcoves in older houses are truly square. The walls lean, the chimney breast may bow and the floor often slopes, sometimes all in one recess. Each unit is made in our workshop to our measurements and scribed to the walls when we fit it, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. A plinth or adjustable feet take up any slope in the floor. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelving for books and records and a desk that tucks into an alcove, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and a large share of the homes around World's End date from then. Full-height alcove units can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Where a fireplace has been blocked up, the chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before units go in.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Questions we’re often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Imperial Wharf station?
Yes, homes across Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Does a conservation area in or near World's End affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Which finishes are there for alcove units?
There are two options: a spray-painted finish done in our workshop, or a hand-painted finish done on site. Either way, the colour is agreed with you. Spraying gives a smooth, even surface, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?
It is up to you. Full-height units give the most storage, while a low cupboard with shelves above keeps the room feeling lighter. We go through the options at the design visit.
How do I get started?
It is easiest to fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
How fitting works for alcove units
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
- You send us a few details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them.
- We come to measure the alcoves, look at the walls and agree the design with you, checking how far the walls are out of square.
- You receive a quote in writing setting out the units, materials and finish, for you to read through at your own pace.
- We make the cupboards and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We install the units, set them level and scribe them to the alcoves. Then we go through the doors and shelves with you.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
How to get a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
Advice
Why bespoke in World's End?
Off-the-shelf units can work in an alcove, and they usually cost less to buy. The catch is the fit: standard sizes seldom match the alcove, and walls that are not straight show up every gap. A bespoke unit is built to the alcove and scribed to follow the wall. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Alcove units in World's End: local notes
In the neighbourhood around World's End, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 59%) and the years since 2000 (about 17%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The Sloane Stanley Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of World's End. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. So a van fitting furniture in World's End typically needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension arranged through the council. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
For an older house near St John's Church Centre, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Carlyle's House, about 0.5 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. For a flat near Imperial Wharf station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

How it’s made
Birch plywood
Birch plywood helps shelves stay straight under books across a broad recess. Thickness is chosen to suit the span and the weight.
Shelves
We set shelf spacing around what you own. Upper shelves can be shallower for a lighter look.
How we price alcove units
Several things affect the price:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How square the room is
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The overall size of the piece
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
What we need to know
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Examples of the look you’re after
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.
