Alcove units in Upper Norwood

How we make alcove units for Upper Norwood

An alcove can also take a small desk, with shelving overhead and storage underneath. It is a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. We plan the desk height and depth with you, with a gap or hole planned so cables can reach the sockets. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are units that sit well with original features and shelving for books and records.

Every room has its fixed points: the window, the door, the radiator and the sockets. Whatever kind of home you have in Upper Norwood, alcove units are planned around those first. After that, the mix of cupboards, shelves and open space follows how you live, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the alcove unit we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

When you need someone else

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Painting the walls, ceiling and woodwork around the units
  • Treating damp in the chimney breast or walls
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician

Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Upper Norwood homes and alcove units

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Upper Norwood were built before 1919 (about 35%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 25%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 19 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Upper Norwood. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 25% of homes in the area around Upper Norwood were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so a full wall of alcove units is often the answer, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.

Kingswood House, about 0.8 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. Living in a block of flats near Gipsy Hill station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Do you need alcove units in Upper Norwood?

A busy family living room is another reason. Toys, games, post and chargers all need a home, and closed cupboards hide them away. The shelves above can then stay tidy.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Walls too uneven for standard furniture
  • Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
  • Somewhere to keep books and records
  • Worn or badly fitted alcove units

Near listed buildings like Subway, about 0.5 miles east of the centre of Upper Norwood, older homes may keep original joinery that alcove units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Common questions about alcove units

Is parking a problem for fitting in Upper Norwood?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

I live in a flat in Upper Norwood. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

How long does it take to fit alcove units?

It depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what fitting day involves before we start.

Can you fit a desk into an alcove?

Yes. A desk in one alcove, with shelves above and storage below, works well in many rooms. Height and depth are agreed with you, with a way planned for cables to reach the sockets.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

How fitting works for alcove units

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what’s near you during the design visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. You get in touch to say you’d like alcove units.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure up and agree the layout with you.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place. Any scribing to the walls is done on the day.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
