About fitted wardrobes in SE21
What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own. It is useful to think about what you wear most before we meet. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and space under the eaves going to waste.
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Tell us about parking as well, as a van typically needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
- A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
What affects the price in SE21
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry

Bedroom storage across SE21
Homes across SE21, West Norwood, Upper Norwood and Norwood New Town among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them, keeping clothes, bedding and everything else out of sight.
About 37% of the homes in SE21 went up before 1919, and about 28% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 28% of homes in the SE21 postcode district were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Post-war bedrooms are typically simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, fixed to suit the wall. Purpose-built flats are home to about 41% of households in the SE21 postcode district, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
Homes across SE21 range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.
West Dulwich: Living in a block of flats near Sydenham Hill station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live near Long Meadow, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.
What it costs
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How square the room is
- Parking and unloading on your street
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.
What we need to know
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Your postcode and the borough
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it during the design visit.
What it is made from
Birch plywood
Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood keeps them flat.
Doors and drawer fronts
Door styles range from simple flat fronts to panelled ones. They’re painted to match or contrast with the walls.
When you need someone else
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
- Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Questions we’re often asked
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. We measure the slope carefully at the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
What happens during the design visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.
How do I get started?
Simply get in touch through our contact form. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design.
Is the furniture made to order?
Each piece is built in our workshop for the room it is going into, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.
Do you work in SE21?
Yes. SE21 is part of the area we cover, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?
We plan the sections around the route into your flat. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.
