Alcove units in West Dulwich

Living-room carpentry in West Dulwich: local notes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 38% of the housing in the neighbourhood around West Dulwich, with about 28% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Dulwich Village Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of West Dulwich. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 45% of households in the streets around West Dulwich live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Close to Long Meadow? Alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 0.2 miles south. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. If you live in a flat close to Sydenham Hill station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Alcove units in West Dulwich

Most Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses have a chimney breast in the main rooms, with an alcove on each side. Alcove units turn that space into cupboards and shelves that sit as part of the room. If your home in West Dulwich has alcoves like these, we design a unit for each one, starting with a design visit to measure. Most enquiries start with furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove and bare alcoves beside the fireplace; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Post-war houses often have a through lounge or a living room with a wide window at one end. Around West Dulwich, many homes come from between 1945 and the early 1970s, and alcove units can give a room like that a focus. A run of low cupboards with shelving above can sit under or beside the window, leaving any radiator clear.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

When you need someone else

Not everything around alcove units is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Finding and fixing the cause of damp
  • Replastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Taking out a chimney breast or opening up a fireplace

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Scribed side panels
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Spray-painted finish

How fitting works for alcove units

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so let us know what applies at the design visit. On the day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and describe the alcoves you want to fill.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves top, middle and bottom, and check the floor for level.
  3. We send the design, materials and finish in a written quote.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving a scribing allowance where they meet the walls.
  5. At fitting, we set each unit level on a plinth or feet and trim that edge to follow the wall.

How to prepare

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

For alcove units, MDF gives crisp doors and smooth sides that take a spray or hand-painted finish evenly. Its moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice beside a chimney breast.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides any slope. It can be set to line up with the skirting.

FAQs: alcove units in West Dulwich

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in West Dulwich?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

My home in West Dulwich is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Alcove units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How long are you in the house for the fitting?

The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Most of the making happens in our workshop.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Which finishes are there for alcove units?

You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted finish in your home. Either way, the colour is agreed with you. Spraying gives a smooth, even surface, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

How much will my alcove unit cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set heights, so there’s often wasted space overhead. We can take a bespoke unit to the ceiling or stop it at the picture rail, whichever looks right in your room. A ready-made unit pushed back to the wall leaves a gap above the skirting, which wastes depth and gathers dust. Built-in pieces sit tight to the wall, scribed over the skirting.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What affects the cost of alcove units

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What the furniture needs to hold

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.
